Dial Indicator for Precision Measurement
A dial indicator is one of the basic measuring instruments in an engineering workshop. It is used to check the runout of shafts and brake discs, to align a workpiece in the chuck of a lathe or milling machine and for comparative measurement, where you are not interested in the absolute dimension but in the deviation from a reference.
The deviation is read directly from the large dial, so even a small movement of the contact point is clearly visible. The indicator is mounted in a stand or holder with an arm and, once zeroed, shows positive and negative values relative to the selected starting position.
